It’s possible that water filters will remove some beneficial minerals. The two most common beneficial minerals that are found in drinking water are calcium and magnesium. These two minerals are also responsible for “hard” water, which can irritate your skin, clog up appliances, cause soap to fail to suds, and more.

Too much calcium and magnesium results in hard water. Our full-service laboratory is equipped with the tools to determine the presence and levels of calcium and magnesium in your water. Often, a water softener is used to reduce magnesium and calcium, thus softening your water. Many water filters will not remove all of the calcium and magnesium but instead restore the magnesium to healthy levels.

So can water purification remove healthy minerals? Yes, but often your water has too much magnesium and calcium. By reducing calcium and magnesium levels, your water could be healthier, if anything.

Is Hard Water a Serious Risk?

Hard water doesn’t seem to pose a major health risk and hasn’t been tied to serious diseases. Keep in mind that future research could find hard water to be more dangerous than currently believed. Either way, while hard water is not currently seen as a major health risk, it can have a lot of adverse effects.

First, hard water can cause your skin to dry out. This can lead to cracking, peeling, itchy skin, and other issues. Hard water can exacerbate dry skin year-round and make itchy winter skin more of a nuisance than it otherwise should be. Hard water can also turn your hair brittle and may cause it to fall out more quickly.

Beyond the health effects, hard water can damage appliances or make them work less efficiently. Hard water prevents soap from sudsing, for example. So, dishes coming out of the dishwasher and clothing out of the washer may still be soiled. Worse yet, hard water can decrease the lifespan of your appliances by clogging them up and damaging them.

Point is, some calcium and magnesium in your water might be good for your health. However, too much and your water will turn hard. This, in turn, could have some adverse health effects and cause other problems too. Fortunately, with the right water treatment system, you can soften your water and protect yourself and your appliances from hard water.

Purified Water is the Healthiest Water

Yes, water purifiers could remove some beneficial minerals from your water. However, 85 percent of Americans have hard water, meaning there is too much magnesium and calcium in their water anyway. By filtering and softening your water, you can reduce calcium and magnesium levels to a healthy level while also removing dangerous contaminants.
